I signed up to O2 from Three last week, and upgraded to an iPhone 5s. At irregular times and in different (formerly connected) locations, it will switch to GPRS, and sometimes to E instead of 4G. This has been happening all week. I have switched it on to ariplane mode, then switched that off, but it still goes back to GPRS. WIFI works fine. I'm in a non 4G area (Brighton), but I should still get 3G. Help!

Thank you. I have made an appointment, but it's not until Friday. I am hoping to have it sorted by then as I will be travelling for work this week 😞

I suspect this is down to porting your number from 3, it's highly unlikely you've had consecutive faulty sims and phones.
I think O2 need to check the port has worked properly.

As the responses from my questions were what I expected this has to be either a porting issue (as @perksie suggests) or local mast issue. you have eliminated sim and a hardware issues
If wrong apn you get an error message.

O2 says it's not a porting issue. That that was done successfully. Masts appear to be fine too, though I have submitted a report. May give up and hurl myself into the sea.

Leave the iPhone somewhere safe on the pier before taking a dip
All will come well i'm sure of it.
