I can only believe that Apple were holding their UK customers in contempt by holding this back for so long.
Is the any logical reason why it hasn't been available before?

I could be wrong, but I'm sure a friend of mine who damaged their iPhone 5 took it to an Apple store and paid £150 for a replacement. That policy is £80 with a £55 excess for accidental damage claims. Not much of a price difference really. I'd be tempted to hedge my bets and not get it (but then I haven't had any mobile insurance for at least 13 years and it hasn't been a problem)!

Annoyingly this seems to have totally replaced regular AppleCare (unless I'm being blind on Apple's website), has to be registered within 30 days of buying the device whereas with the old AppleCare you had a year and doesn't attract student discount pricing like the old AppleCare did
