We had a similar issue with a 4s last week.
Iphone connected to do backup and download photois and videos to free up the space as handset had reported no room for further content.
My boss did not realise he was not on latest itunes and proceded to upgrade itunes on his pc.
This then created the issue as for some reason it now reports all previous backups are corrupt!!!
So setup as new phone and tried everything to restore but no luck so all app data lost and photos etc not saved.
I think it is vitally important to ensure before doing an ios upgrade that before connecting to itunes (if you do not use the cloud) is to first ensure latest itunes is installed and that before proceding with any ios update on the pc ensure all data is copied to pc and deleted from the iphone to ensure room for ios upgrade.

Obviously something serious went wrong with the download. Saying you didn't have itunes installed previously, how did you have your phone backed up?

Did you have an earlier version of iTunes instead of 11

Check your computer to see if a back up of your phone is still there - on a Windows 7 PC you find it in
Computer/OS C/Users/(user name)/AppData/Roaming/AppleComputer/Mobilesync/Backup . Worth doing the occasional back up of that file when doing your file back ups as a just in case.
