6.1.1 Software Update Wiped phone

6.1.1 update

15/2/13
Tried to update my iPhone 4S software from 6 to 6.1.1. Phone froze on "verifying update" so switched off & on again & left the update until later.

When I updated later "Update verified " then screen went black & plug into iTunes picture appeared on phone screen. Plugged it immediately into my laptop. iTunes 11 opened which I had not downloaded saying "welcome to new iTunes". iPhone then restarted as new phone. All previous back ups have disappeared & my phone is wiped.

I have been told by Apple that if there is not enough memory space for the updated software that the phone may go into recovery mode & need iTunes.

I have never downloaded iTunes 11 to my MacBook Pro as I had heard a few complaints about it. It is on my machine along with all 110GBs of my music even though I store all music on a external hard drive & not laptop.

Due to this software update I now have a blank factory reset phone. No contacts, diary, pics, videos, texts, apps etc. Apple have said there is nothing they can do but I have lost everything some is backed up but not all.

I will now be forced to use the iCloud to avoid this again.

You can't put a price on what I've lost but I will be complaining further.

We had a similar issue with a 4s last week.

Iphone connected to do backup and download photois and videos to free up the space as handset had reported no room for further content.

My boss did not realise he was not on latest itunes and proceded to upgrade itunes on his pc.

This then created the issue as for some reason it now reports all previous backups are corrupt!!!

So setup as new phone and tried everything to restore but no luck so all app data lost and photos etc not saved.

I think it is vitally important to ensure before doing an ios upgrade that before connecting to itunes (if you do not use the cloud) is to first ensure latest itunes is installed and that before proceding with any ios update on the pc ensure all data is copied to pc and deleted from the iphone to ensure room for ios upgrade.

Obviously something serious went wrong with the download. Saying  you didn't have itunes installed previously, how did you have your phone backed up?

Mainly to sort the pass code security flaw, but will also apparently address the battery issues.

Check your computer to see if a back up of your phone is still there - on a Windows 7 PC you find it in

Computer/OS C/Users/(user name)/AppData/Roaming/AppleComputer/Mobilesync/Backup .   Worth doing the occasional back up of that file when doing your file back ups as a just in case.
