500GB data used in less than a day

Anonymous

Hi,

I have an iPhone 5s and previously always had iPhones.  I had a text message on 5th Feb (yesterday) saying I used all of my data allowance (this happened within one day as it is refreshed on 5th of each month).  This therefore means I have managed to used 500 of data in less than 24 hours.  I have never used this amount before - usually this lasts me half the month.

Can you tell me what has happened?

Your apps are updating in the background. You need to switch off mobile data. I'm not an iPhone person, but it's my understanding that if you're using WiFi and the phone goes into sleep mode it automatically switches to mobile data to conserve battery power.

If you go to Settings and then Cellular, you can see what app has used all the data.

This article has more info.

Bambino is right, iPhone goes into sleeping mode even when connected to WiFi so when you use WiFi, keep mobile data switched off.

Also, change from automatic updates to manual updates, and close backround apps when finished using them.

Turn off diagnostic sending in your settings too.

Settings - privacy - location services - system services.

Settings > Background App Refresh > Toggle all off or choose the ones you don't need. Personally I've left the weather option on only.

Using Siri uses data too.

We can't "guess" what has exactly used your data but your phone will tell you if on iOS7.
Check in your settings menu and then we know what we are dealing with.

I doubt very much apps updating would use anywhere near 500mb but you do need to check the usage log

All the various updates using data connection will have an effect.

If the op feels that after checking what their approximate usage is and does not marry up with what the network has deducted then contacting O2 will hopefully see them reset their data allowance.

Yes I believe they can also do a network investigation as well to see where it is going
