iPhone unlocking

I recently filled in an unlocking form for iPhone and received an email and text to inform me that my request was successful and to just connect the iPhone to iTunes and a message will appear telling me that the unlock has been successful.  However, no message is appearing when I plug in the phone - with the o2 sim and with the non o2 sim.  I read other forums which suggested carrying out a back-up and restore before putting the non o2 sim in too, which I have done, and still no luck.

Does anyone have any further advice?  I have contacted an o2 guru who could not really help with the situation...

Does the phone register on the non O2 network when you put a non O2 sim in it?

When I put in the non O2 sim, the phone says 'no sim' so it is not recognising the sim at all.

Ah, so after I receive that email I may have to wait 10 days or so before the message would appear on iTunes? I am on a pay monthly contract.

Yes it's an active sim. I use it whilst living in France, surely the fact that it is a French sim shouldn't be an issue?
