Settings - general - network - mobile data network and change the apn at the top to mobile.o2.co.uk and the mms apn to wap.o2.co.uk ( in o2 its a letter o, not a zero).
Change nothing else
This will now work.

This was a brilliant and helpful reply. I had exactly the same problem. My wife broke her Samsung Galaxy so I gave her my old iPhone 3Gs. This solved the problem that she could no longer get mobile data (despite having an O2 contract with data).
Now - one more question if I may...
Is it also possible to get the iPhone "Visual Voicemail" working? If so, what are the appropriate settings?
