Signal dropping without 3g on

Hi

Oh man, does anyone know why if i turn off 3g my phone signal drops from 4 bars to 1 or no service? Ive did what O2 recommended which was wipe the sim card, now they say i need to take the phone to a shop and get a new sim card. but i seriously doubt that is the answer.

I tested this 20 times over the day and its the same result each time, i checked the O2 page for problems in my area and it says all is fine.

One other thing, my wife and i both have iphone 4 and upgraded to ios 6. but in the settings menu on the page where you turn 3g on or off, mine is called "cellular data" and my wifes is called "Mobile data". i know its the same thing but surely something is different because the wording is diffrerent? odd!

If all else fails you could ring ahead to your local Apple Store, and arrange an appointment with an Apple Genus at the 'genius bar', where they will give your iphone a diagnostic, to ensure its operating within normal parameters.

It could be because the mast you're trying to connect to has been upgraded to 900Mhz via 3G only?

the 3g 900 shows as 3g so will not affect when 3g is off.

You may be near a congested 2g tower and being handed over to another tower further away this is not the same as 3g cell breathing.

o2 do not upgrade to 3g900 only  900mhz is the o2 default 2g band that ofcom have allowed for part to be used for 3g900 so they upgrade existing 2g 900 masts to use 2g 900 and 3g 900

I presume Apple have an answer but this appears to be quite common and makes no difference at all to the functionality of the phone. I think it's just an Americanism.

was just trying to find a reason for the drop in signal when 3g is turned off, never happened before ios6, and i turn 3g on and off alot as i only have 100mb data limit a month, i need to preserve those pesky 1's and 0's

I think you need to get to your nearest Apple store to get the problem sorted as it seems to be an Apple rather than network issue. Customer service second to none.
