I upgraded to a samsung galaxy 111S...bit of a novice allround really. Trying to set ringtone, and it tells me I have to do this via dropbox? found dropbox on apps, several attempts to register, tells me not connected to 'net or try later... any suggestions for a damsel in distress?

Not sure why you need dropbox to set a ringtone? Go into settings >sound and find ringtone in the list and set it from there. To get data settings for internet send a text with the word "Active" to 2020. then save and apply the settings you get sent back and restart the phone.

You have probably inadvertently set dropbox as a default setting. You can remove it in the phone settings.
