have a new samsung but cannot get it to work with previous sim, any clues

It should slide out of the socket. You may need a pin to gently push it out.

What phone did you have before and what's not working?

have samsung s5830i now. have been told its just an updated model to the one i had before. put sim card in but cannot make/rec calls or send/rec texts

Definitely sounds like the sim is in wrong.
