Since a recent update on my Galaxy S2 I no longer receive sound email notifications, have checked and all the normal settings and they all seem ok, has anyone any ideas ? I am not very technical (old guy) so please keep it simple, thanks in advance of any help.

If it's the only issue then it would be a bit drastic to do a factory reset, although that's the most likely to fix the problem. Notification sounds are a separate setting in the sound menu so I assume that is not on mute? Only other thing I can think of is to set the notification sound to silent in the mail app then reboot the phone and try choosing your sound after a reboot.

Have you checked the sound notifications from within the actual email app and not just in the phone settings ?

Try taking the battery out for a few mins. Anything else that's not working correctly?
