Does anybody know how to fix this, or is it a hardware problem?
I've tried clearing caches, etc. and have just done a factory reset and it still comes up with the same message. Very occasionally it does work, but not very often.
The first time it happened was in the middle of taking a bunch of photos, so I know it wasn't from being dropped or anything (the phone has never been dropped anyway).
If there is nothing I can do, will O2 repair it ? It's only 10 months old...

It has a 2 year warranty so you can either arrange for O2 or Sony to repair it. We normally recommend dealing directly with the manufacturer.

Thanks for the suggestions - I hadn't considered the warranty.
Can I take it into a Sony shop or O2 shop or do I need to send it back to O2?

Any of the above options are valid for warranty repairs but Sony directly may give you a better service.
There are also some Carphonewarhouse outlets that have on site repair shops that will cover warranty repairs for you.
