I recently joined O2 from Three, because Three are turning off their 3g network and I stopped being able to make any calls. I have a Sony Xperia 1ii which I believe is capable of 4G calling but this did not work on Three's network. Three has no 2G to fall back on.
On O2 I can use my phone again, because O2 are yet to turn off 3G. However, I would like to know that my phone still will, once this happens.
There are no options in my phone settings that allow me to enable/disable 4G calling.
I just spoke to O2's technical support. They told me to look through the settings which (as I already knew) revealed there was nothing I could turn on or off.
The advisor then asked me if I could access mobile internet whilst on the call with him. I could. He said this meant that my phone was already using 4G calling. I pointed out that while on the call, the symbol in the top menu bar is "H+" not 4G, suggesting the call was going through an H+ connection not a 4G one.
He assured me that no, that doesn't matter; if I can use mobile internet whilst on a call, this means my phone is using 4G calling. I was sceptical but said ok and ended the call.
However ... if I change my "Preferred network type" to "4G/5G" I am unable to make any calls.
Does this not confirm that I'm correct - my phone is not making 4G calls?
(I have tried doing the *#*#4636#*#* code and there is a switch next to "VoLTE provisioned" but it's turned off and greyed out.)
Solved! Go to Solution.

In that case, No matter what network your going to use, Your going to experience the same issue.
If you bought this second hand Sony from say CeX, Cash Converters etc then get your money back.
Reading up, VoNR is also known as 5G Calling and i have only see this on EE with a motorola razr ultra 50.
Yeap, some eles with the same issues with 58.2.A.7.93 Here but a EE sim worked for them, Same case for you? and also https://community.sony.com.mk/t5/5-series/wifi-calling-on-android-12/m-p/3863483

As I've mentioned before, Android 12 is possibly too old for O2's flaky wifi / 4g calling.
XDA Dev website will give you full instructions on how to install Android 14 to it.

Sony will still help you, never known them not do so even on second hand cameras and phones... And there is a very good user forum on Sony's website ..
It should work without o2 firmware, but it doesnt mean the network it originated from hasn't blocked the service in firmware, and asked Sony to do so..
Another good resource maybe XDA Developers..

@MI5this is an old list from a while ago, is that right?
O2 tell me that my phone isn't compatible, based on the fact that it's not in their current list of devices. I have a feeling it ought to be really, given that the previous version of it (the Xperia 1 rather than 1ii) *is* listed there.

Well until you do the SIM swap I suggested earler to find out if it is the network or the phone then everything else is pure conjecture

The 1 ii is listed above and is compatible.
The list was from December 2020

Then O2's end is OK
99% certain it's the phone, especially as it didn't work on Three either

Get yourself on XDA as I suggested above and flash the latest generic EU firmware @line-wait

OK, thanks to everyone for the advice.
Elsewhere it's been suggested that I use the Xperia companion app to do a software repair on the phone.
Whether I do that, and/or try and flash the firmware by some other method, I'll need to decide based on whether the hassle and risk of messing something else up is worth it.
Ultimately this only really matters when o2 starts turning off 3g.
