I recently joined O2 from Three, because Three are turning off their 3g network and I stopped being able to make any calls. I have a Sony Xperia 1ii which I believe is capable of 4G calling but this did not work on Three's network. Three has no 2G to fall back on.
On O2 I can use my phone again, because O2 are yet to turn off 3G. However, I would like to know that my phone still will, once this happens.
There are no options in my phone settings that allow me to enable/disable 4G calling.
I just spoke to O2's technical support. They told me to look through the settings which (as I already knew) revealed there was nothing I could turn on or off.
The advisor then asked me if I could access mobile internet whilst on the call with him. I could. He said this meant that my phone was already using 4G calling. I pointed out that while on the call, the symbol in the top menu bar is "H+" not 4G, suggesting the call was going through an H+ connection not a 4G one.
He assured me that no, that doesn't matter; if I can use mobile internet whilst on a call, this means my phone is using 4G calling. I was sceptical but said ok and ended the call.
However ... if I change my "Preferred network type" to "4G/5G" I am unable to make any calls.
Does this not confirm that I'm correct - my phone is not making 4G calls?
(I have tried doing the *#*#4636#*#* code and there is a switch next to "VoLTE provisioned" but it's turned off and greyed out.)
Solved! Go to Solution.

The bottom line is, that in theory at least, it should work, however, due to it's age, it is probably running firmware that is too old to be supported anymore.
Check via the social media teams to see if there is anything on your account that needs adjusting, but other than that, it may be time for a new phone.
Message them on Social Media if that works best for you -on Facebook (https://o2uk.co/O2CFB) , X (https://o2uk.co/O2CTW) or Instagram (https://o2uk.co/O2CIG)

Not sure if this is you @line-wait asking on the Three community, but they seem to confirm it.. https://community.three.co.uk/t5/Devices/Xperia-1-ii-not-making-it-recieving-calls/m-p/38256
I would contact Sony to be honest, and see what they can advise.. There may be ways to flash a none Three firmware onto the phone at your own risk, and you will need to completely wipe the phone..
No that's not me asking on the Three forum @madasaf1sh - evidently I'm not alone in this problem - but I think I recall coming across that thread a few weeks ago.
The Three advisor redirects the issue to Sony - but if you go to the Sony website here:
The instructions it gives don't work for me. I'm on Android 12, and it says
"Tap the switch beside 4G Calling or 5G Calling (if applicable) to turn the feature on. If 4G Calling isn't available, contact your network operator."
I have no "switch beside 4G calling". So it tells me to contact my network operator.

Thanks, is contacting the social media teams usually more productive than phoning support?

I have myself a Sony Xperia 10 VI with build number 70.0.A.3.157 and on pay monthly plan, Now for me WiFi Calling and LTE is been used for voice so is defo working for me, I'm with zen internet for broadband with FTTC 80/20 connected via 5GHz wireless.
Out of interest, have you tried the following?
1) Connect to WiFi and then Settings > System > Software Update (anything to update?) if so download and install the software and repeat till you get ^Your device already has the latest available system update^
2) Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs > O2 and tick the 4G Calling and also enable Wi-Fi Calling once thats done tap Calling Preference *Call Over Wi-Fi* i have also disable Allow 2G and selected preferred network type to 5G/4G as LTE is 4G.
3) Go to airplane mode and enable just the WiFi, Anything?

1) Yup, system software up to date.
2) There is no "4G calling" "or Wifi calling" switch for me to enable. It's that settings page that o2 support directed me to; they obviously also expected these settings to be available. And it was the same when I was trying to get support from Three.
3) Connects to wifi only as expected.

Not sure why you haven't spoken to Sony support, and asked them as it sounds software related and they can advise better than anyone else on how to resolve this, as I said it sounds like firmware which has disabled the functionality
Where did you buy the 1ii from??

I bought it second hand.
The reasons I've not tried Sony Support so far are:
- Their product support page advises that I contact my network operator if in the situation I appear to be in
- Info from O2 (posted further up this page) suggests that my phone *should* work on O2 without special software
- I don't have a direct customer relationship with them, because I bought the phone second hand, and based on previous experience with large companies I'll spend a lot of time lost in a system of AI chatbots that are incapable of helping me.
I've contacted O2 via social media and if that doesn't get anywhere I may try and go to Sony.

Also... to see what firmware I do have, I followed the instructions in this Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/comments/aefj8a/how_can_we_find_out_which_regions_firmware_our/
and the result is (via "XperiCheck" website), that my phone has "O2 pay monthly UK".

Well, I think we have exhausted things here.
Other than doing a SIM swap with a known working VoLTE phone it may be impossible to isolate the issue.
