So here are some test photos I've taken a little earlier - I varied between 4:3 and 16:9 ratio (23mp and 20mp respectively)
There is definitely A LOT of blurring/lack of focus/sharpness at the edges:
For example, this photo:

The bell is in focus but check out the bushes - they seem very blurred!
Maybe it's the automatic mode using too small a focal length? That'd explain why the bell is relatively sharp but beyond that everything is blurred - almost like it's a portrait shot where you want the person to be focused and the background softer.
And here: http://i.imgur.com/hEgwHyk.jpg
The auto mode identified it as a landscape but look at the bush to the left.
The quality doesn't match my expectations 😞
Edit: In fact, it seems like the problem is all down the lefthandside like other users have reported 😞
---------------
This has been reported on xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/general/camera-performance-quality-flash-t3206214
And on Sony's support forums: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z5-Z5-Compact-Z5-Premium/Z5C-blurry-camera-images-more-blur-on-...
I'm going to be returning my handset - what is the process for that? I don't want another Z5 if the issue is only going to happen with a new phone (I do not want my 14-day return period to expire while I'm swapping around trying to get lucky with a working camera).

Too return it you must go back to where you purchased it from, ie in store or online.
If online call cs on 202 for details.

My personal opinion is that the lenses are misaligned and/or not the perfect shape for that distance to the sensor...
It was like this on z3 to some extent but not as bad.
