Can i buy any sim free mobile phone from anywhere and bring it in to o2 to get my sim only account put on it.

You most certainly can, i do it all the time with pre release and unique devices... 

If buying a used phone make sure it is networked unlocked.

Thank you for the quick reply, my current phone i bought it at an o2 shop and got a sim only deal but they don't do that now and i didn't want to pay monthly, and now i know i can buy one from elsewhere, many thanks again.

Yes, thats what I do.  Bear in mind certain functions may not be available ie 4G calling and Wifi-Calling to a non-o2 handset you intend to bring across as in some cases they need the O2 Firmware to be present on the new phone.
