Samsung S4 Email & A4.4.2

Anonymous
Not applicable

Since upgrading to 4.4.2 on my S4 periodically I have problems receiving email. I can send out just fine but can't download.

General network access (WiFi/3G) appears to be okay although I am not a tech-drone so not a heavy user when out and about.

Researching web content I've checked the Master Sync & Data Sync options, everything appears to be in order; cycling the Sync mode per O2 Guru advice was ineffective.

Logic would suggest that as I am able to send email that Sync is active.

The only way I can restore full functionality is by removing and reinstating the email account, a little irrirtating doing this every few days.

My email server is POP3 and I'm using the native Email service.

Any similar experiences? Advice?

I checked

Settings -> Connections -> Data Usage -> AutoSynch Data     : set on

For the email account itself, Synch is flagged on and Synch Settings are all set to manual.

As mentioned before, when the account is in this state I am able to send out email... just not receive it.

Prior to it going into this state the application appears to run very slow regardless the speed of connection, it appears also to download my entire mailbox rather than the latest entries.

I suspect it maybe some critical combination of actions which result in this behaviour as I don't see posting on other forums with this same behaviour.

I've not tried other mail applications.

Having manual selected means it will only download email when you ask it to and not automatically, but I think the problem is in the settings of the account or in the fact that you do not have an imap option (modern email is designed around imap).
If you are comfortable sharing your email settings I'll have a look and see if there is anything obvious there?

I use Bt Yahoo which is PoP3 without any issues receiving e mails pushed to my iPhone.

Certainly a conundrum you have.

That's because the iPhone email client will poll pop3 accounts (same as GMAIL will on android) but the stock (basic) android app won't.

Hence the reason why I suggested K9 to you.

If not wishing to use K9 it may be possible to set the account up through the GMAIL app which will do what is required also.

Yes K-9 was a massive help.

It's disappointing then that some smartphones have these issues with stock e mail apps.

They are only meant for the very basic of users.
Most people have their own favourites that get used and the stock ones are just ignored.

just to reiterate, I had absolutely no problems at all prior to the upgrade to 4.4.2 and I have had my phone for several months now.

Email account settings are unchanged between then and now, I can't see those being an issue, nor the synch mechanism (auto/manual) but it is always possible...  adapting an old saying - one mans logic is another mans chaos!

I really only need to review email when I'm on the road hence my preference to download manually, as I said, not a problem before the upgrade.

I'm told by my system administrator that IMAP is supported so I will try that configuration.
