In WhatsApp, go to Settings >Chats and untick save to "......." or change the location.

All photos (media, as any MP4 or wav files) sent to you via WhatsApp have to be stored somewhere, @Techwizzard - and to find out if someone has a way around this, you'd be better searching the likes of Google, Bing or similar.
