My phone won't work in USA

Anonymous
Not applicable

I am on holiday in the USA and my Samsung is showing 'emergency calls only' with a tiny 'R' by the signal bar. Before I left England, I took the phone into an O2 shop as I didn't want to rack up a huge internet bill and only wanted to use the phone for calls and texts. The chap did something which I understood to be turning off the roaming facility. Did this effectively bar all phone use? That doesn't make sense. Can anyone help - in words a six year old would understand as I am not too mobile-phone savvy.

Settings >More >Mobile Networks. Change network mode to "Auto" then goto Network operators and chose "Automatically select preferred network". Restart the phone.
