Lollipop, lollipop, where for art thou lollipop?

I am here, says Lollipop while standing atop a shiny Samsung Galaxy S5!

Okay enough of the ye olde talk – Lollipop means business. If you thought Jellybean was buttery smooth, then you’ve not seen what Lollipop can do. This is a major platform update and isn’t just a collection of minor bug fixes or anything like that… This is a full blown update – new eye candy, new & fresh menus, new features – all while keeping the system running smooth & fluid while keeping your battery life in check too. You can find out here what Lollipop can do > http://www.android.com/versions/lollipop-5-0/

The update is now live via KIES and should be live via OTA update towards the end of the week, so go grab it now and let us know your thoughts on the new update

I updated to the lollipop update last Thursday (5th Feb), it began downloading the update by itself (OTA). The first thing I noticed when the phone booted, was how slow it was at loading the apps that are located on my memory card, Kitkat seemed to do this fairly fast, but lollipop displayed the 'memory card' logo over these apps for quite a long time. Another thing that I noticed was system lag from time to time, I can't stand devices that are slow and sluggish! The phone seemed to hang every now and again, even whilst scrolling through my apps and even more to my annoyance it was showing signs of lag during texting
(i.e. getting no haptic feedback and the letters would not be displaying on screen, then eventually the phone would catch up, vibrate and the letters would appear on screen in a burst). My battery seems to be on par with the kitkat update, which is ok for me. I work shifts so my phone can be off charge from 4:30am up until 7:00pm and it'll be anywhere from 30-15% which is good.

I checked for another update yesterday (8th Feb) and to my suprise there was a 291mb download waiting for me. Since downloading this, the lag has dissapeared and it seems to work more fluidly like the trusty Kitkat build did. It hasn't moved from 5.0 so Im geussing it was some sort of firmware update or something? But anyway, this build now seems pretty reliable, no lag and battery is the same.

I have had no issues with bluetooth (I have it connected to my Samsung gear all day, plus it connects to my car stereo whilst driving), mute button works (never had a problem with?), not had any problems with any apps, etc.

Over all I am happy with the update, I like the look of the notification bar now and how the notifications become stacked once it has too many to fit on the screen. I like how the lock screen neatly displays your notifications in a list. The only thing that took me a while to get used to was the white/orange default text screen but you can change this in the text settings. You can also change the graphics surrounding the text bubbles, in the text settings.

Hi all,

As with all software updates both we and Samsung keep an eye on how you guys are getting on so please do keep your feedback coming and let us know what you love and maybe anything you’re not so keen on. That being said, we wanted to keep you updated on a couple of things.

Where’s the OTA update?
Samsung will be releasing an updated build of its S5 Lollipop 5.0 software to address some reports of “sluggish performance” that a small number of users have highlighted to them. During our testing of the software we experienced no such issues, hence why it was approved on our end for release. For anyone who is experiencing performance issues – sorry for any frustration caused, but we hope this new update should resolve the issue for you.

What about 5.0.1?

Samsung and Google agree what level of OS is required and Google will not allow a version that they know to have problems to be approved by them or released into the market. 5.0.1 was largely a ‘Nexus’ update to address some minor bugs or flaws; Google approved the use of 5.0 for S5 which means that any fixes in 5.0.1 are not mandatory for good operation.

When will we get the new software?
We are testing the new SW now and will complete our full set of tests and monitor for anything out of the ordinary. Once we approve the software, we’ll then send it back to Samsung who will schedule this for release to customers. All-in-all, we hope you’ll see this push at the beginning of February.

Anything I should do when upgrading?
When upgrading to major new platform releases, we would recommend backing up any important photos / videos / documents and doing a full factory reset before the update. Not doing this on any kind of handset – iOS, Android, Windows – could lead to problems so we’d always recommend starting from a clean slate for the best experience.

Hi all, I just wanted to pop back and let everyone know that the latest Lollipop update from Samsung began pushing out via KIEs and OTA yesterday. If you don't have it, we'd whole-heartedly recommend updating now - and please remember to do a backup of any important data first, do a full factory reset, and then update. Not doing so could cause issues so please do ensure these steps are taken.

Hi @Chris_K

By Latest, I assume you are meaning 5.0 with the supplementary patch

The information about doing the factory reset before upgrading is a bit late for a number of us, as we are suffering with issues such as battery loss and other stability.

Is there a workaround for this, such as doing another factory reset and restoring?

Want to solve the battery issues, charge lasting FIVE hours, My work S4 now lasts longer

High reported consumers are screen and mm-qcamera-daemon as well as Android itself

Also see issues with the link to my Galaxy Gear Neo

Hi Ernie, sorry to hear you're one of the few encountering these issues. It shouldn't be too late though - doing a full reset (backup anything first!) should help. With the battery, Lollipop has some deep battery monitoring systems in place and I'm told could take a couple of days for things to settle, but should stabilise fairly soon.

Could you do try the restore and if you still have fast battery drain issues after a couple of days, pop me over a screenshot of your Settings > About screen (showing version/build number etc) so I can have a check into it?

Hi Chris,

just to be clear, is there an update for those (like myself) that have already updated to 5.0 when it first came out?

Any news on when we will get the 5. update?

many thanks.

Kerwin Robertson.

Every S5 will get all the updates that are released, I matters not when you updated originally.

Does this apply to the Mini as well? Or is the update for that coming later? I have a new S5 mini and no update OTA or through Kies

Updates for the mini are not the same and will have their own release schedule.

Thanks MI5, I did wonder. Any idea where to find out more info for the mini? Or is it more wait-and-see? I couldn't find a thread for it...

We don't have a specific thread on here for it but all Samsung have said is that they will release it in the early part of 2015 (no more detail than that, sorry).
