Good solution, but each step needs to be confirmed with the 'Home' button not the 'on/off' button as noted.

Devices may vary so it's worth trying either the Home or Power Key depending on which phone and version of software you are on.
Also, on some of the latest firmwares you only need to hold power and vol up to enter the bootloader menu (home button no longer required).
