HTC One S - Problems with Airplane mode after 4.0.4 update

Hi, since the 4.0.4 update my HTC One S starts up with Airplane mode on (and therefore no mobile phone connectivity) most of the time.  On the settings screen it shows Airplane mode as 'turning off' with the on/off button disabled.  The only way to turning Airplace mode off is to hold down the power button and select to turn Airplace mode off from the Shutdown/Airplane/Reset menu and then reset the phone. Is there any way prevent Airplane mode from getting stuck in the turning off state?

Sounds like you need to do a factory reset, but back up first.

Hi, since the factory reset the only app that I have installed is the My O2 app and the problem was occurring before I installed this.  The only other thing I have done is install the updates for the apps already installed on phone when the phone prompts me.

It sounds like an OS conflict somewhere but I honestly don't know if the reset didn't fix it..... Give HTC a call to see if they have any other ideas.

I have investigated this and it's not just an O2 issue, Vodafone users have the same problem. I suspect Orange, T-Mobile etc as well.

 

Simply put, the latest update has a bug.

 

The odd behaviour it is causeing is that after a long period turned off, when the phone turns on it does so in airplane mode but gets "stuck" trying to turn that off. A turn off and on cures the problem.

 

Obviously this is not a fix, it's just a get-around.

 

What other users have found is that going into settings > wifi > menu > advanced and turning "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to Always and "Best Wi-Fi Performance" to on helps.

Also in settings > power > fast boot turn to off.

 

Naturally, the advice from the service providers such as O2, Vodafone etc is all the same..... do a reset, factory reset etc etc. But this makes no sense because as soon as you bring the phone uo-to-date the problem returns.

 

What should be happening is that the service providers should listen to their customers and together have a long talk to HTC on getting a bug-fix put in place ASAP. Yes I appreciate that it's not thier "problem" but it is something which is adversely affecting their customers. As a such HTC are far more likely to listen to a big multinationals than individual users.... now what the likely hood of that happening? Hmmm....

I have had similar problem with my HTC One S, and got a workaround today off the vodafone forum (was only affecting HTC One S users I think). A factory reset always solved the problem but that's not an acceptable workaround.  The workaround that I got today was to turn off fastboot - this make a phone restart re-enable the service and not a reset. 

 

Some info from my experience that is a bit different to posted above but may help some folk:

 - Every time the phone has lost connection (about 10 times now in 2 months) it happens during the same part of my train journey to/from work - a patch where there is no 3G reception.

- When the phone is in the broken state, I am unable to change the network mode from 'GSM/WCDMA'. I wanted to try this as a workaround as many have reported that android has a bug when switching between 2G and 3G (which is what it has to do at that point in my journey). (a similar problem affects iPhones too).

- The problem doesn't happen when I'm coming out of airplane mode but when I'm already up and running.

 

My phone has gone back to O2 and declared perfectly OK (because the first thing they do is a factory reset which fixes the problem). I've also had a replacement phone and sim. All that acheived was that I now have someone elses old phone with a shorter battery life than the one I gave back.

 

My HTC Desire S on 2.2 never had such issues, and I went back to using that to prove it was a problem with HTC One S or ICS. I have also had a string of 3G usb dongles that have failed to cope with losing 3G and only a reboot can get them and the rubbish software working again.
