Galaxy SII Overheating and Battery Drain

My Galaxy S2 has randomly started getting really hot around the top third of the handset near the camera, the battery drains within minutes and the phone seems to switch off requiring me to remove the battery in order to switch it back on again.

I've looked at loads of support forums which seem to suggest it may be a rogue app, but how can I find out if that's true, and if so, which app is causing the problem?

I received the latest firmware updates to Android version 4.1.2 through Kies a while ago and this problem seems to have appeared since that update, is that likely to be the cause or just a coincidence?

Does anyone else have the same issues or have a solution to the problem?

Hi there,

I typically find that my S2 gets warm/hot in that area if it's put under a heavy load, but it doesn't lock up or stall.  Following your update to 4.1.2 (and this potential problem) it might pay you to wipe the device clean and start from scratch (I have read that following an update it should ALWAYS be done, although I don't know how true/valid it is).  If you want to try this first then backup everything you feel necessary and then...

Power your phone off.  Press and hold the Volume up + home + power buttons together.  Then you'll see an Android picture followed by some options.  Use the volume +/- keys to scroll up and down and press power to select.  Wipe the cache and then the option to factory restore.  NOTE: You will lose all the phone's customisations, apps, etc but NOT the contents of the internal disc (but DO backup anyway just in case).  After you've rebuilt your phone you may be lucky.

But to add... my wife had an S2 from Vodafone running 4.0.3 and from day one it was getting hot (screen was warm even in standby) and would lock up (had to remove the battery to reset).  Even after an update to 4.0.4 it was the same.  Within a week it was replaced with another handset and was fine, so you may have a hardware fault.
