Emojis in a text Message

When I try to use emojis in a text message it just leaves a blank space.Any Ideas why?

What phone do you have & are you aware that if you try to include emojis in a text it then is classed as mms & chargeable at a higher rate

Text message character set needs to be set to unicode.
