I always suggest if a person can to check out YouTube reviews and to have a play with working demo models at shops to see if it's a phone that matches your wants and needs.
I assume the phone is on the latest firmware and if you've recently updated a hard reset may help to clear out old files making it possibly glitch.do a back up first to save your data in the phones memory.
Edit : I suppose you could sell it and purchase a better for your needs phone.

Maybe a factory reset would help, back up first.
Personally I don't like the Xperia models but there are plenty that do. Personal preference really.

It is possible that an app is causing the problem but I would go for the factory reset and reinstall the apps one by one to see if they cause issues.
The phone does have a 2 year warranty so that's an avenue to go down. I would deal directly with Sony myself.

If so I'm not surprised it may be sluggish after a years use with 8GB of internal memory but only 5.8 GB user available.

That actually means very little in reality....
The important factor is memory management - Something that Sony inexplicably missed completely with the 4.3 update.....
