use other network's deals as leverage.
when i upgraded to my galaxy s4 in 2013 there wasn't any super deals that other networks didn't beat by a country mile.
i'm watching the S6 now, pretty much every other network has them on £36/month "refresh" style contracts but the o2 shop shows £46/month.
a month or so from now they will be a bit lower and i'll be ringing for a deal or going elsewhere.
my first o2 phone was a pay&go when they were BTcellnet - a phillips savvy circa 1998/99/2000 (not a clue which year though) and have stuck with them since, but you don't get a deal with asking (in a polite manner)!
