I have been getting text's and emails telling me that i have to change my sim card because the network is been upgraded and my old sim will not work after 1st April 2021, they have now sent me a new sim to do this change, why will my old sim not work after this date?

@pedge

Sim cards that are not at least 4g compatible will not work due to changes in the network.

Your sim is just too old and needs updating.

I received one of these SIMs back in January.  The package had limited instructions, not even the number of the phone it was for (I have more than one).  1st April passed and no changes were noticed.

I'm guessing it was intended for an old 2G phone I have retained and still use occasionally.  It still makes calls and sends/receives texts.  It has never been used for data, as the old tariff doesn't allow it.  Did the network changes only affect data?

I am reluctant to swap the SIMs in case it breaks something.  Is there any reason why I should?

@JW300

The SIM is blank so can be used in any phone, it isn't sent to you for a specific one..

One of your sims must have flagged on the system as "too old" so it would be wise to do a SIM swap from the oldest SIM you have to the new one you've been sent.
