The SIM in my Doro7030 phone on O2 Classic PAYG is marked for 4G and 5G.

As promised by O2. the icon for 4G appeared on the screen last autumn (2025), and I clearly do now have 4G connectivity.

O2 also promised to enable Wi-Fi calling on suitable phones on this tariff "by the end of the year" (2025). This has not happened (no Wi-Fi calling icon has not appeared. The phone simply shows that it detect the Wi-Fi signal).

According to O2, I need Wi-Fi connectivity to download a Doro software update which has been waiting since last summer.

I phoned O2 PAYG customer service yesterday to report that I still can't download the update because my phone, which is fully set up for Wi-Fi calling, still won't download the software update.

I was told that THERE ARE NO PLANS TO MAKE WI-FI CALLING AVAILABLE ON THE CLASSIC PAYG tariff.

Is this so?

If not, how can it get the phone set up to connect via Wi Fi?

Is the o2 pay and go classic tariff not being phased out at some point. As it's not been on sale for new customers for a good while now.

Had to Google Doro. As never heard of that make of phone and it says depending on model some of those phones are 4g only.

I have had wifi call on my o2 pay and go rolling plan for just under a month now and at times signal can come and go yet I get steady 67mb speed in my house most of the time as I don't get 5g signal in the house and 4g signal is not great.

o2 has not been great since they started upgrading pay and go accounts and there have been reports that some customers including myself have been having minor intermiting problems.

Maybe you will need to think about changing to a pay and go big bundle or rolling plan.

The OP states the phone shows a wifi symbol so we have to assume it is wifi capable.

O2 no longer sell the classic tariff but anyone still on it can remain so.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if they excluded it from wifi and 4g calling in an attempt to force people off it, asit tends to be very low use and no money in it for O2.

Thanks to all who made helpful replies!

I was wrong to understand that O2 would upgrade my Classic PAYG tariff to wi-fi INCLUDING wi/fi calling by the end of 2025. My misunderstanding was because I (wrongly) thought that the two were part and parcel of the same connection facility, and that the recent appearance of the "wi-fi" (only) icon meant that the phone was aware of the presence of a wi-fi signal, but was not able to use it.

My misunderstanding was reinforced by the persistent showing on my Doro 7030 phone of a software update which needed installing, which would not install.

I have now had a very useful conversation with a technician at Doro, which made it clear that:-

1. The icon means that the phone can be used for mobile data, but does not allow w-fi calling (as several of you stated).

2. When I read out the codes forming the software update in question the update was identified as one of three used for connection to EE. (Reason for the update showing? Possibly because I had the phone connected to EE for a short time after acquiring it last year.)

3. My phone does not need dedicated software to work with O2's w-fi because O2 does not produce such software in downloadable form. IS THAT RIGHT?

4. The current range of Doro non-smart phones connect themselves automatically to the network provider.

$, The Software update has cosmetic nuisance value only. It can't be removed. I just have to accept that a "1" will show top left on the phone's screen. It can be cleared, but it reappears the next time the phone is switched on, so I shall leave it alone!

4. The update "invitation" on my phone can't be removedcon

Just to add,

I noticed this morning that it no longer mentions PAYG customers getting WiFi calling, in the FAQ "I’m on Pay As You Go. What do I need to do?", here, https://www.o2.co.uk/help/international-and-network/network-and-coverage/3g-switch-off

It used to include the sentence,“4G & WiFi calling will be available for Pay As You Go customers by the end of 2025."

fwiw, I have an o2 classic sim since 2018.

I have an ex Vodafone Moto G62 5g and noticed Wifi-Calling started working immediately when connected wifi with the classic SIM. Coincided with 5g becoming available too. 4g calling (VoLTE) doesn't work.

I bought a new GiffGaff Moto G75 (5g) over xmas. To my initial disappointment, Wifi-Calling didn't seem to work with the classic SIM. I then discovered if I put the phone in Aeroplane mode and keep Wifi enabled, I can make calls via Wifi. 4g calling does not work on g75 though.

I also have Sky mobile monthly SIM in another phone. Neither wifi or 4g calling work in G62 5g or Redmi Note 9, but both work on G75 when I briefly tested it - no need to use Aeroplane mode for wifi calling.
