It's free but you will need an O2 sim to use in the phone.

If you can't borrow one, it will be £10 for a PAYG sim.

Em, I don't think I explained myself properly, sorry

My iPhone is K-nackered, so I'm looking to buy a used one, and CEX give 24-months warranty as standard.

I'm currently with a ""virtual"" network, using ""not O2"" as the carrier.

@Deltech O2 haven't sold locked phones since 2018. Are you sure the phone you're purchasing is locked? I'm surprised that CEX would be selling a locked phone. If that's correct, you would still have to use an O2 sim to unlock it no matter which carrier you're with now.

You did fully explain it and I understood you.

There is no charge to unlock the phone, but, you need an O2 sim as explained in the guide I posted.

You can borrow a friends sim and use it in the phone and ask them to request the unlock, or you need to get a PAYG sim, top it up with £10 and then request the unlock code.

Yes it's locked to O2. I have a budget so it's an iPhone 6 plus (same as my K-nackered one), also it's the last iPhone with a "proper" headphone socket (the subsequent models only have lightning socket, and I don't "do" wireless headphones), so unfortunately this is the model for me.

What about using a Tesco sim for the purpose of unlock, as Tesco use the O2 network.

Someone in the house already has a Tesco sim on PAYG.

@Deltech Then you'll have to use an O2 sim to unlock it. Maybe someone at CEX is on O2 and will put their sim in the phone for you. If not, you'll have to either ask a friend on O2 to help or get an O2 PAYG sim yourself.

Made 2 calls to O2 today, 40 minutes then 60 minutes, and apoke to 2 ladies whose accents I can only describe as ""android"".

Both told me 100% I will NOT be able to unlock this phone, as I am not the ""original account holder"".

Any further comments on this?

That means that something is amiss with the phone, such as its been reported lost or stolen, or someone has done a insurance claim and then sold it to CEX (They do sell a lot of Blocked phones)..

I would just fill in the form on the website and check again, also have a look on check mend to see if there is more to it.

You can always try one of the Market Stall unlockers.

I don't have the phone yet. Wanted confirmation from O2 that it could be unlocked before I purchase it. But they say it can't. Didn't provide the IMEI number. So these 2 ladies I spoke to say that it's not possible for the owner of a 2nd hand phone to have it unlocked.

I must say I find that very hard to believe because I've previoulsy bought several phones on eBay on various netowrks and been able to get all of them unlocked by the parent network.

I'm wary of market stall unlockers because I wouldn't want them to do anything that would invalidate my CEX warranty.

If I were to fill in the form on the O2 website, and it was successful, how long is the process?

CheckMend is a site that will verify if a phone has been blocked.

You can unlock a phone - as others have been advised previously, you would need to use an o2 sim in it for a little while (contract or PAYG) and once the phone is registered on the network you can request the unlock.

To be fair, I have bought a few phones in the past from CEX and 75% of the have gone back, as they where locked / reported stolen / Insurance owned phones.

I would buy from the likes of Handtec or Blackmarket, a lot cheaper than CEX and also come unlocked with a warranty and 14day change of mind.

After filling in the form its a few days

Otherwise just don't buy yourself a lot of stress
