The answer is "it depends", @JaneB65 - it might work up to a point, but a few tweaks to get it working best for both voice and data may be needed - the gathered knowledge of the Forum is encapsulated in this , which it might be good to familiarise yourself with before you leave home for your trip. If I can just add to the good advice given by @pgn.(This isn't in the guide)

Data speeds are generally notoriously slow in the US and many customers benefit from buying an inexpensive PAYG local sim (Either T Mobile or AT&T networks)

If needed, these can be bought from any 7-11 shop in the US.(Don't buy from the airport)

Before you travel make sure you have the O2 Travel bolt on at least. Your tariff may have given you O2 Travel Inclusive which is even better.

Turn Voicemail off before you fly (if people want you, they will call again)

Use Wifi as much as possible.

Finally, it may be worth you checking with O2 that there are NO roaming bars attached to your account.
