Watch5 4G not working abroad

My watch5 with its own esim works fine in the UK (without phone) but now I am in Greece and it doesn't work at all - cannot make or receive calls. I have enabled roaming even though it shouldn't matter. I can see it latches to a local network but can only do emergency calls. I only chose O2 because of roaming - otherwise I would have chosen something else. Any ideas?

Phones will roam but there is no roaming on the watches at present

Is that an O2 issue? Or even with other carriers?

Actually since yesterday I can send/receive SMS - wonder if something is changing. Before definitely couldn't. Has any one else seen this?

So am I the only whose O2 on smartwatch now works for SMS abroad?
