Unless you have something covering the earpiece, I'd contact Apple to run a diagnostic check.

Perhaps get your phone checked out by Apple, @Emmacb43 - any large Apple Store should be able to give it the once-over to see where the problem lies.

Here are some steps you could try before taking it in to apple
