How can I transfer my phone number and sms from a totally dead iPhone 6 ( water damage ) to a new phone?

@Mehitabel Are you able to try the sim you have in another phone? It may still work. If not, you'll have to contact customer service and request a new sim.

As for your sms, if you hadn't backed them up, I believe they are lost.

Thank you - that's helpful. All my data inc. SMS IS backed up - I hope that I can purchase a new SIM card in an O2 shop ( would take required photographic evidence) .... I will have a new phone.

Your messages and all other data should be backed up to iCloud so just restore your latest backup to your new phone when you sign in on it.
