Hi. I sometimes get missed phone calls that come up as they are from America Instead of 01253 822583, it registers on screen as 00 1 (253) 822-583, I have to redial correctly (I can't return the call). Or it comes as 44 1253 822583, this I get inbound call and then it hangs up? Can anyone help?? Thanks.

You phone will just display the number in the format that it is transmitted in.
Nothing you can do to change it, sorry.

Do you know anyone in America who would be calling you? I ask as I wonder if it is a real call or some sort of marketing ploy?

Often they are marketing or sales calls generated by a computer dialing program.
They can set them up to display any number they want.

Yes they use disused telephone numbers, so dialling them back will return no such person. I'm pretty sure they are using encrypted VOiP communications to evade detection. It really gets on my nerves. Getting a Cisco handset and only allowing certain calls through to your line would be a working solution if a little costly.

Generally speaking I don't answer them and then block them from the Call Logs screen.

Thanks for the replies. The numbers that come up as America ect are actually dialling me. This is my business line and when I call back they did want me, the numbers are correct as long as I put them in the correct format?

Are they coming in to you through a switchboard or direct dialed ? and yes, I realise they are incoming calls.

I use sky divert from my home phone, but sky say it's nothing to do with them and O2 say it's not them? Thanks

The numbers you have quoted are too short to be numbers from the US. The US country code is 001 or +1. There would then be a three digit area code (253) and then seven numbers 822-583? You have only quoted six numbers after the area code.

The 44 code is the country code for the UK. A call showing that code would not be originating in the US.

Yes, the options to add images are available in full desktop mode and from the reply menu.

The number that's showing as WA USA cannot be correct. There aren't enough numbers. The number above it with 01253, which is the same as the supposed US number is a number from Blackpool

The number in the +44 format is not unusual at all.
Quite why it tries to convert it to a US number is a mystery though unless it's related to it being forwarded from your landline?

If I spoofed my number to an American one would the handset know any different?

Like if you spoof a Mac address/IP address, can it reliably be traced back to the original machine?

So unless your handset is extremely clever it's just going to display what it thinks is right, right?

Either way, the companies must be using clever automated diallers to avoid detection.

If it was genuine they would reply...

As @Bambino says it isn't a American number...so that leaves me with only one conclusion really?
