Try a reset of your iPhone by ;

Holding the Top Sleep/Wake Button and Home Button until the Apple Logo appears, and then let go of both. Your iPhone will reset.

And or ;

Settings , General , Reset , Reset Network Settings.

You don't have Do Not disturb toggled on do you. Their will be a half moon in the status bar

It's a Do not disturb feature on the iPhone to which the half moon icon appears although it should still say O2 in your status bar !

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5463 explains the feature.
I would check with O2 on 202 for contract customers or 4445 for Payg customers to check on the swap.

Has the service stopped on your previous SIM card yet.

Also if the iPhone was not purchased from O2 but privately check it hasn't been imei barred.

I purchased a sim only contract yesterday at 4.00pm. I was told in O2 store that the network would activate 'after a while' and to keep turning the phone off and on every half hour and it would activate then. 29 hrs later I still have a no service message. I am afraid to do the reset in case it sets me back to having to wait even longer for activation. O2 store where I purchased contract is absolutely no help and o2 customer services advised that everything is okay at their end and I should just wait as it can take up to 24 hrs to activate!!! Help please?

Hi

If the network is busy it can in exceptional circumstances stray over 24 hours.

Do as they said and turn the phone off and on to help the connection.

If no joy by tomorrow morning then give them a bell on 202.

Have you tried the sim in another phone as a process of elimination.

Is the phone your using unlocked to all networks or accepts an O2 SIM card.

To add : in rare occasions a sim can be faulty. O2 shop can swap in store to a replacement sim for you.

Sounds like a bit of a delay in activating sim's at the moment.
These things usually resolve themselves but a call to CS every now and again won't hurt....
