Going to answer phone before ringing

I keep missing calls because when people call me my phone goes to answer phone without ringing I have even got someone to phone me while I have phone in my hand on ring!!! Have tried **61*901*11*30# to lengthen ring time but this has not helped . Any clues please ....?.....??? iPhone 5

If voicemail is not a deal breaker then perhaps turn it off by dialing 1760.

When you say the phone is not ringing do you mean at all or not for very long

Is the call divert icon displayed at the top of your iphone? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2795

You could have the full divert all set

Ok understood then I can't see turning off voicemail making any difference as Adam has suggested I would say its on divert

Suggesting turning off voicemail and checking again was to remove that as part of the problem.

Ie: If the OP turns off voicemail and it continues then its time to look at another avenue.

Process of elimination.
