Can I save text messages on my iPhone 4S?

The screen on my iPhone 4s is black. The phone still works as I can use it in the car and use the bluetooth display on the dash. The $s has been playing up for a while so I have decided to treat myself to a new 5s.

Question is... I have texts I need to save on the 4s. No, not sexy ones!! I am divorcing my vile husband and have texts from him that I may need to use in court. Silly of me not to screen dump them, but hey ho....Does anyone know how I can save texts from a 'dead' iPhone?

Have you tried resetting the 4s by holding down the power button and the home button and seeing if the screen comes on

To try and bring back the iPhone to life You could also try hooking up to iTunes to restore the device after performing the back Up.

Putting it in dfu mode if your iTunes won't recognise the iPhone May help. It will come up as iPhone is in Recovery mode.

@ bob how can the op do an Icloud backup from a black sreen iphone.

To the op when you connect the iPhone to iTunes is it recognised and performs a backup? is so just set up the 5s as the old iPhone in iTunes and the sms conversations will come across as part of the setup of the new phone.

I have some conversations going back to my iPhone 3 on my 4s.

If it is not doing the sync an backup in iTunes then let us know

@bob then that is an iTunes backup not an iCloud backup which is done via the handset

I hook up my iPhone to iTunes and perform a back up both to iTunes and iCloud from iTunes without even touching the iPhone ?

1 you are assuming the op has iCloud backup enabled. it can only be enabled on the iPhone
2 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 states that automatic is only iTunes's or iCloud not both but manual iTunes is if iCloud is on.

it would have been better asking the op for clarification before replying

I didn't say "use your icloud to back up"

OP is in a fix and needs as many avenues as possible to retrieve SMS messages.

To the op please can you answer the following

1 Did you have iCloud backup enabled on the handset before the issues appeared with the screen?

2 If not did you do regular itumes backups on pc / mac? or can it still do them now even with the black screen?

3 if you did either then setting up the new iphone using the iCloud / Itunes data will bring back your SMS history.

Let's not fill up the OP's thread.

The point surly is that they get as much help as possible. In that quest some points of help will lead to a dead end. A process of elimination.
