Unlocking iPhone 5

I've got an iPhone 5 that I will eventually need to unlock so I can use it abroad. I know how to contact O2 to do this but I was wondering if there is anything else I will need to do - someone told me that I will need to put a SIM from another carrier in the phone, but I won't have this until I travel and buy it!

You don't need to connect to iTunes anymore with the 5 but the unlock will not complete until you put in a non O2 sim.
Best to just pick up a sim from somewhere and do it before you leave the country.

You can order free sims off the web. If you get one from Three it will arrive already activated so you won't need to top it up
