Stolen iPhone

I recently gave my old iPhone 2 to my daughter, having put it back to factory settings. Today it was stolen during a break in.

I'd love to get it locked forever so that the scumbag thief gets nothing. BUT I don't have a record of the IMEI number and there was no sim card in it. I don't have the original packaging either. The only thing I know is what the phone number had been up until iPhone5 launch day.

I can't see that I can do anything, but just thought I'd ask here just in case.

Any thoughts

If used on O2 they will have a record of the IMEI registered against the sim card. Not sure how freely they give the info out though. Might need a crime number etc... Best to call CS to check.

Contact customer service as they should have a record of the IMEI numbers that your mobile sim has been associated with. If the phone is still registered as yours they should be able to block it.

If you've reported the theft to the police, which if you haven't, you should do, also give the crime number to Customer Services.

Thanks for responses. Since my original post I have unearthed the original sales receipt from the O2 shop - and it has the IMEI number on it.

So, tomorrow, armed with the police crime number she now has and the IMEI number, my daughter is off to the nearest O2 shop to get it blocked.

Good news you found the receipt and imei number.

This will help stop it being used in the Uk.

Unfortunately I hear of the practice of some unscrupulous market traders who still buy imei locked phones to send abroad ! Disgraceful !!

My iPhone 4 was pick pocketed from me nearly a year ago and I was gutted.

Glad you sorted it. Bit of a bummer especially at Christmas. At least you can get the IMEI blocked.

Well done finding the original receipt and IMEI. You should now have no trouble turning that phone into no more than a paperweight.

Thanks for the messages guys.

I've been thinking - some bloke in a pub gets offered an iPhone cheap, buys it, puts a sim card in and it works fine (probably a first). A day later it turns into a brick. His delight turns into rage.

Initially I was feeling sorry for him, but then I thought, no, this is receiving stolen goods, a crime in itself. Either way, he will hopefully hunt down the seller and convert the brick into an enema !!!

Lets hope your daughter does not encounter any problems with her not being the registered owner of the phone in a O2 shop. I suspect they may refuse though.

Hadn't thought of that. So to save her a wasted journey I've done it myself over O2 livechat. Took about an hour, but got there in the end.

Always make sure you set up find Iphone app as soon as u get he handset or iPod, iPad then you don't need all that hassle ov IMEI you can just hope on enougher device n track or block the device

I for one have had great sucess from findmyiphone. Got stolen from the office at a nightclub I was working at whilst I was sorting out a fight.

40minutes later I have a terrified apology from a young guy and the bouncers working for me were £10 richer each

also register your imei on the http://www.immobilise.com/ database helps the police locate owners etc after theft if found
