Cyber Bullying

Last night on Channel 4 (available on 4OD) was a cracking documentary on cyber bullying.
How many of us would know what cyber bullying is?
How many of us on here have been subjected to cyber bullying whilst online.
How many of us would know what to do if we were being cyber bullied.

There are some typical behaviors such as lighting the touch paper, creating the spark and then stepping back and watching it all unfold. Familiar to some I am sure.
There are clear methods of bullying.
And there are many more much more subtle forms of cyber bullying.

If you get a chance, watch the programme. It will be uncomfortable for some and eye opening for others.

Cyber Bullying !!

A practice that allows twisted people to say hateful things whilst hiding under a cloak of anonymity.

I haven't been subjected to it myself but my grandson was... via social media in particular Twitter

(No need for any reminders of age limit restrictions) ....

His life became untenable. I found out because of his change in personality.

All I will say at this point is....I fixed it.

Wouldn't dream of asking.

But it does go to show how anyone can be a victim. On any website. At any time.

It was a brilliant programme and will worth a watch. For some it will be uncomfortable.

I wasn't able to watch it whilst here in Spain. I have watched similar programmes though particularly since my own experience. I find every single programme difficult to watch....but necessary. I know it affects all age groups but children of school age worry me more than others. They seem to keep their feelings and experiences hidden ....until tragically it is too late for some.

What I do like to see is investigative programmes exposing these bullying trolls....

Internet trolls are evil. They start trouble then sit back and watch. Sounds familiar.

They cause untold alarm and stress.

In rare cases they go so far that the victim commits suicide.

The last news item than ran for a while was the case of an internet troll who had bullied for years a high profile couple who lost a child. Slightly reversed situation here. When the cyber bully was exposed rather than stand trial and face the shame she had brought on herself...she commited suicide.

These types of people need professional help to understand what their doing is wrong & can have effects mentally on the victim & also themselves

@browni it is with sadness that I read about your loss. This thread has been created to bring to the front of people's minds what cyber bullying is about, how we can all be victims and indeed the reality that some of us already are victims having been subjected to incidents that affect us all many different ways.

I have asked that your post beer removed as we don't want the entire thread to be derailed as this is a topic close to everyone on here / online.

I too lost a good friend this way but it had nothing to do with cyber bullying. If indeed @browni your friend was a victim of this, then I'm sad for you. It lives in the memory and I can understand you having strong feelings but in the light of this, your comment makes little sense. I would have thought you would be in agreement with the posts.

Again, my sympathies to you and everyone else affected by such sad circumstances.

If I am being honest no I haven't because it is fundamental to the debate.

By all means in my opinion have your say. It is just the choice of language that perhaps needs modifying.

Like others though I have no idea what you went through not can I understand it but I do empathise with it.

I'm glad you find out about your grandson's situation and helped him in time. I've heard of horrific consequenses to cyber bullying. However, I was wondering if you could 'recommend' a way of 'fixing it' because I need to have something 'fixed'.

None of us on here are placed to help fix things like this. Cyber bullying and Internet trolls need dealing with in a variety of ways. May I suggest you watch the programme, it might give you some good guidance on what actions might be available and the support services that are out there.

@Anonymous Sorry for my late reply (been offline most of today). I can't go into specifics about how my grandsons issue was resolved. All I will say is everything we did was above board and legal. We had an idea who the cyber bullies were and just needed to prove it. We got our proof. The police and other authorities were involved. The bullies were punished. Every situation is different though and as @Anonymous it is a good idea to watch the programme he mentioned. There is also a great deal of material online about cyber bullying. I hope your issue gets resolved very soon.

I'm unable to watch the programme here but sometimes the written word can be taken entirely out of context and given different interpretations by different people. What can be taken as bullying by one person could be seen as banter by another. However, there can be no mistaking malicious and constant cyber bullying and vulnerable people do need any assistance, be it legally or via the support mechanisms in place. Far too often people don't know how to deal with this and that's when we see the tragic events that are all too commonplace these days.
