Help: Kindle - I just can't get through the on-screen instructions .....

..... & can't seem to give the damm thing away

It was a buy from me to me for my 60th in January BUT my old & impaired brain won't process the on-screen instructions = no paper instructions as back-up & oh boy are the instructions of the verbal diahorrea type

I am vexed as it was a logical thing for me to do & was offerred help from an author friend of mine = Nhys Glover (Google her) but she got busy which is a good thing for her

I am not one to bleat but I'm really stuck and so much is Kindle only on Amazon now - I'm into werewolf romance atm

It is hard for me to do IT stuff as it must be for you, dear reader, to understand my struggling with 21st century IT stuff

Before my son 29 flew the nest he would have patiently explained it all to me BUT he is busy & I don't want to pester him & make a nuisance of myself = I just make a nuisance of myself here on O2 Community Forum

Any help would be much appreciated as always

I will patiently go through these sites & persevere at my own pace

And I promise to you & to myself that I wont throw the basic Kindle at whatever wall is nearest if I get any way near distressed with it = I will walk away from it & chill out with a virtual Mojito from Wantys or a cuppa tea outside in this lovely weather we are having atm

Which kindle did you get?

I have the Paperwhite but passed the previous version with keyboard onto my OH so if you want to ask anything specific I'll try and answer. I'm working over the weekend so may take a little while to answer though.

It should already be linked to your account if you bought it from Amazon. The easiest way to get your books on it that you buy from Amazon is to buy from the PC and send it to the Kindle in the section that's a bit like the 1-click box on the right of the page.

Age is no barrier to tech, I'm a tad older than you but have to explain a lot of things to my boss who is several years younger

Hi @Anonymous I have two Kindles, the last one is the Kindle Fire. I too struggled with the onscreen

instructions. (purely due to the way I learn)

I printed the Amazon guide for the Kindle from their site. Then I could read through them at my pace...

and practice what I read on the Kindle itself.

Many people are brilliant at absorbing onscreen instructions, and 'getting it' immediately. I am not one

of those people I need to learn from written instructions and keep them as reference.

Once I had these, I progressed through my Kindle step by step until I understood it

If I say so myself, I am now quite proficient with the it.

(on a side note though..I still prefer real books.... I am a book fanatic you might say

Aldaweb & Cleoriff thank you for what you both say, its encouraging & I'm very like you Cleoriff in the way I learn, but no printer as I kicked it some time ago & it does not function it was very briefly therapeutic for me at the time but not so good for the printer & it so long-winded going up to the town library & printing out there ..... need to get myself another basic printer preferably one with surrounding rubber bumpers

Can I get back to you Aldaweb after the weekend please? ..... I am very grateful for your offer of help & well done you for advising your boss

My son 29 is a CADman & grew up with computers & seems natural with IT but has other priorities, quite rightly, than having me take up his precious time with IT stuff when I like to enjoy contact with him & not use up the time talking about my laptop/Kindle/phone/digital camera/SKY, but I will ask him in Autumntime if he can organise me a new medium sized flat screen tv. He lives in Leeds, I live in Skipton

Its a side effect of some of the tablets I'm on ..... I've been told to drink more as the volume of liquid in my body system waters down the side effects of the tablets = na then

I'm a survivor & can do a fair bit of self-preservation = I'm going off at a tangent here ..... to get back on track

They say Capricorns become younger as they get older = translated that means I can throw a strop/tantrum which I didn't do as a child or adult or I wouldn't have lived to celebrate my 60th year on this Earth = another bigger ROFCGU & I've no-one to give a to** least of all me, BUT I can come a cropper eg forking out for a new basic printer, which I know won't cost that much & if there is any mess I have to clean it up :robotlol:

I can oh so clearly remember my mum telling me in a terse voice 'Jane, you get dafter as you get older' & that'd be when I was a young adult not yet 21ish I'd say

Living on my own with Marvellous Marty the Magnificent = my big/ginger/white/oh-so-loving/hunter/rescue cat, who is out on his adventures as-we-speak, is great

Got some really, really good news about my man Brian :manvery-happy:

He has just come back from a Mon-Fri Blackpool holiday ..... he went to do a bit of stand up comedy twice & he said he got the sympathy vote & got the best laugh when he fell off stage he has other bookings in the area now & the break did me good too = gave me some thinking time & watching the Rocket on tv snooker ..... well, he rang me latish yesterday evening when he was fairish wobbly = his words & he is planning seriously to go browsing the properties in the Blackpool & inland area for him to move to & I am so so pleased for him & am now confident he has the opportunity to reach 70, he is 65 atm

Brian knows the whole area as he worked for Plessey on contract to BT ..... actually he worked all over the country including a good spell in London UNTIL new technology made him redundant btw me always doing eg clerk/typist work new technology made me redundant & no I did not wish to go into personnel = sorry Human Resourses = I'm a back-room girl = always have been ie I don't like telling others what to do = I work best for one boss, preferably male, I've only had one good female boss & one bad male boss ..... I can tell who has not done any office admin training & reception/telephonist training though

Brian, then worked as booking office/platform staff at Skipton train station a job he also loved & the highlinght of his week was going up to man Settle station where he was completely his own boss ..... = so he has a good retired railwaymans railcard & free bus pass & the whole thing of moving to that part of Lancashire will be a challenge & something new for him to do :manvery-happy:

His live-in 34 single daughter, she is engaged and does visit her fiance at his place in nearby Sutton-in-Craven = well she will have to sort herself out :womansad:

I will stay here in Skipton where although always an offcumden I have become a local :womanvery-happy:

All good stuff eh? & Brian will sell his house easily as it is in the middle of Skipton's Asian community & next doors has already shown an interest = to knock through & yes Brian would be beaten down down in price but he'd be paid in cash notes in a carrier bag

I'm starting the day of well & the rain's stopped = I'm hoping to make it to the 10:00ish start to the events today in the Waterways Festival particularly Skipton Brass Band ..... I have tambourine & marraccas BUT no transport = perhaps I should join Keighley Salvation Army Band = only if I can wear the bonnet though & uniform and hold the fund raising tin when they play at Christmastime on a Saturday daytime near the town's Christmas tree

BandofBrothers that's great for someone like me 'cos the jargon alone here bamboozles me & I reckon I have to let that go quietly away-like .....

BUT I do need a plan

Aldaweb has offerred to help me with the Kindle & well I daren't tell him I could not even get the connection going from the Kindle to the SKY hub box ie internet so I think .....

I really could go with a free personal IT Guru? The Guys & Dolls in the town's O2 shop have always been patient & courteous & professional with me

& having thought about it I would like to start from me ie in the way of my laptop/camera on phone + Aldaweb on the Kindle = he has offerred to help me = I'm not ashamed to ask for help I just feel guilty bothering people

It was just great when my son linked up his super-duper computer with my laptop & we talked to each other either with me on the mobile or on the headphones, but not yet done that with this laptop only done the headphone thing with my old tower system = now re-cycled

You see sometime he could then take control of my laptop screen & I kept my hand well away from my mouse = it worked & my son would tell me what he was doing whilst I watched the pointer he was controlling on my screen ..... Just to give you another example of the help I really really do need = the size of the script on my laptop screen in particularly Gmail mode has gone really really tiny, something I will have done with tinkering around on the laptop not really knowing what I was doing :womanfrustrated: I just can't read detail I need to?

Ah but this woman is determined to succeed in my own way with help here if you'll let me & have made serious progress come the end of the year

BTW MI5 you early on when I joined here you gave me some links to sites to get some basic utd IT training, but it did not suit me = particularly the BBC one I think = it was all tick box stuff & I expect you know by now in frustration I kick things BUT never the cat so could not print out, keep in a file instructions for me to look back on & remember like how Cleoriff has told me she learns = gotta getta printer next payday :robotfrustrated:

Time for some of that new Twinnings de-caff T ..... having something cooked out for breakfast outside on Canal Basin today at the Waterways Festival

BUT, have time Cleoriff if you want a virtual assistant to do some clearing up at Wantys Bar after last night

One thing I do find with eg Kindle thing is that its not stand-alone ie all new technology is interconnected & reliant upon each other = yes a wide open broad statement from me a complete novice with IT stuff = what do you think?

I've enjoyed engaging with you in your kindle thread and can see from the advice that's being channeled back to you on that subject you will soon be fluent in using your Kindle to its full potential.

What I would also like to speak to you is about forum etiquette.

When a person posts on a subject it's encouraged that both the original poster and the people replying stay on that subject. This is so the thread remains factual and if another person performs a forum or google search for the same kind of issue then the thread they come across is not overrun with other subject matter.

What I'm saying is if you want a chit chat about your days plans (which I'm always more than happy to exchange info) it's best to start a new thread in the Off Topic boards.

Please don't think I'm sticking my nose in or anything like that and you've done nothing wrong.

Heck I'm as guilty sometimes regarding going Off Topic.
