Going off that lady I should be ok but who really knows? I always do online banking using mobile data rather than home wifi but who is to say that is safe even though I change passwords regularly?

Source your own router hardware, keep an eye on the vendor's site, apply all firmware updates and when it disappears from their product lineup ditch it as the chances are they are no longer going to maintain the firmware for it and that can leave you wide open.
