O2 Falling Behind Competitors?

I have been with O2 on a pay monthly contract for the last 8/9 years ever since they released the old Genie sim cards. However, since the introduction of Smartphones are O2 falling behind there competitors in terms of the package offered? I am currently on a O2 iphone contract with a 1GB data allowance which is due to expire in September this year. In the past, when I have exceeded my 1GB allowance my data was automatically downgraded to “Edge” until the monthly renewal was reset (Usually hit limit 2 days before this). However, on my last recent occasion I again had exceeded the 1GB data allowance and was actually shocked to find that O2 no longer switch there customers to Edge and instead restrict the internet completely much to my annoyance.

This in term had lead me to check upon there competitors package and it soon became clear that O2’s monthly contracts were no longer competitive and more expensive. Im sure we all have to agree that with the continued use of smart phones a 1GB allowance is very restrictive thus I will be leaving O2 once my contract is up. I don’t consider myself to be a heavy data user (Monthly 1GB-1.5GB) but if you consider many other operators 3, Giff Gaff, and EE provide the same service with no restrictions and cheaper than it all makes sense.

Hi and welcome to the Community.

One question springs to mind is that are you comparing like with like? I.e. Are you comparing the cost including handsets or are you comparing your current tariff against a sim only alternative?

I have 8gb. O2 do not restrict you to 1gb of data, it depends which package you choose.

Hi.

This is something we all found out not too long ago when another new member posted to report it as so. These options have been in 02 t&c but they used the option of throttling data but now as you say stop data use and the only way to carry on is a data bolt on or increasing your tariff data.

If you do move networks then please ensure you check their own t&c and that they give good signal where you are by trying out their PAYG sim cards. Remember to request a pac code to move your number to another network. .

It sounds like you need a larger data tariff I personally dont see anything wrong with o2 stopping you when youve run out after all thats what an allowance is for I know its changed but I think o2 were the only ones who used to let you still access it after you had run out

As I recall the other networks used to charge as soon as you went over your allowance, I recall 3 charging 10p per MB which might not sound alot but use day an extra 100mb (which ain't much) and that was £10 gone.

I think it depends on what your requirements are.

O2 is quite reasonable with its unlimited minutes tariffs. E.g. you can get unlimited minutes/unlimited texts/1GB data for £25 a month (£19 if you take out a 12 month SIM only contract), which isn't bad.

There are far better networks out there for data.

Just for clarity I thought that unlimited mins & texts plus 1gb was £21 or are you thinking of a 4gc tariff? (Can't get onto o2 shop right now to confirm as closed for maintenance)
