I've used an O2 email address for 2 years and have never had any spam to it.

Whereas 2 other addresses with different ISPs due to leaks which were acknowledged by one of them, do attract a fair bit of spam, but don't cause me any problems.

At most I get half a dozen a week, but my email client spam filter takes care of them.

You could maybe set up another one.

Hi there, I have a question about the spam I've been receiving on my O2 email account. I use another provider for my email and am at a loss to explain why and how the spammers got hold of this address since it's only been used for O2 communications! I can only think that it's been given/sold by O2 staff? Is this viable? I'm actually thinking of closing my account as there seems to have been a serious breach of trust. I'm not a happy bunny! Anyone had this happen? Thanks.

You are massively over-reacting. No-one has sold your details or passed them on.

If you were to create an email address with a random name. Then within a few days you would receive spam.

This is because spammers send millions of emails to randomly generated email addresses.

Indeed if you look on-line or in magazines you will see articles where they create random email addresses and see how long it takes for spam to arrive, for a provider like hotmail it only takes a few hours.

I do not feel I'm 'massively over-reacting' - that's your opinion. I have yahoo/gmail addresses and rarely do I receive the type of messages I'm getting here! As I've never used the O2 email account except to exchange messages with O2 I'm naturally feeling puzzled and concerned.

Strange, I have had a O2 email account since 1999 and 2 linked accounts for 18 months and I can honestly say that I have never had any spam to any of the accounts. This being the case, it's obvious to me that O2 have never had a policy of selling or passing on all their customer email addresses.

I certainly can't say that O2 have not given or sold on your email details, though I find it doubtful, but it would be interesting to see if anyone adds to this thread so we can have a general idea of the number of people affected by spammers.
