Transferring an O2 SIM-only SIM card to a new SIM-free phone.

I have a Sony Xperia M (Android 4.1.2) phone bought as a SIM-free phone. I have a SIM-only, pay-monthly, SIM inserted in that Sony Xperia M.

If I buy a new SIM-free phone, can I just transfer the existing SIM-only, pay-monthly, O2 SIM card to the new phone, or would I have to contact O2 first?

You can transfer it without having to do anything, as long as the sim you have is the right size for your new phone.

If you were to buy an iPhone you would need to get data package changed.

My current SIM is micro size. I'd should make sure the new SIM-free phone takes micro size as well. Thank you.

What you pay for is the service on the sim card, depending on the answers above you can use any phone you like.

You can use an adapter or swap the sim as necessary.

You can transfer your tariff and number to any sized SIM card you may need via the swapmysim procedure.

Thanks, MI5. Bambino has just pointed out the new phone's SIM card would have to be same size, in my case, micro. You've just made me aware, if I were to buy an iPhone I'd have to buy data package.

You probably already have a data package. If you were to buy an iPhone you'd just have to have O2 switch it to idata. Also the new iPhones take nano sims which are smaller than micro. You would have to just swap sims, which you could do in an O2 store or order one online and do the swap online.

Basically you can buy any phone you want and then O2 will give you the appropriate SIM and data package to match - All for free

Can I pick your brain please? I am due to get delivery of an Xperia SP and don't have a micro sim at the moment. Will O2 supply it with the phone and will I be able to transfer my number and all my data if they do?

The sim card should be with the phone.

If its not then you can pick then up at any o2 shop where they will perform the swap there or have one sent out to you.

Then perform the swapmysim procedure. http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/

You cannot switch any data to your new sim. If you want to transfer contacts you will have to do it some other way. The simswap process just transfers your phone number......
