What does APN mean?

On the forum recently, someone was told:

"Turn off mobile data and change the APN so that your phone can't connect to the internet."

I know how to enable and disable mobile data, but what is APN?

If your phone is working okay and you can get online, you don't really need to know about APN's.

My phone is working okay - it's the hugely expensive Sony Xperia M. Thankfully I don't have to know anything about APN. Thanks perksie and Bambino.
