O2 have given me an email address.

I joined O2 network on 22 Oct 13. Looking through O2 emails sent to me after I joined as a pay-monthly customer, I've just noticed that I've been given an email address by O2. It reads: ... @o2.co.uk.

I didn't ask for the email address from O2 and I don't know why I've been given one.

I've been using my own long-term email address since joining O2.

Can I just ignore the email address that O2 have given to me?

Yes, keep a note but it will disappear soon as the O2 Email service is being closed down anytime now except for O2 Broadband users.

If you have registered with a different one they should use that to contact you, if not you'll need to change it in MyO2.

Yes, I registered using my own email address that I've had for years and O2 have always contacted me using that long-term email address. So, it's safe for me to ignore the O2-supplied email address. Thanks, perksie.

I've used the link (http://www.o2.co.uk/o2email) you supplied in your answer to me. I now understand why O2 gave me an email address.

Since joining O2, I've been registered with O2, O2 Community and MyO2 app with my own long-term email address. Thanks again.

It has always been automatic and everyone gets one, but once the shutdown has finished that won't happen.

For some reason the close down has been delayed so we're still waiting for it to start.

It was always a mystery to me why O2 insisted on issuing a discrete email address for each account. I ended up with 4 addresses including my legacy Genie address, one each for phone broadband and mobile broadband, none of the last 3 have ever been used except to forward billing notifications to the legacy address.

I think it's just as simple as that's how they set the system up originally, many moons ago.

Back then free email services were less prevalent so giving every customer an email address was seen as more valuable.

I can remember the broadband pages offering up to 10 email addresses and thinking what a good offer it was at the time.

Hard to believe it was only five years ago and it's all going.

After looking around a bit, I believe O2 launched their free email address for every registered user in early 2002, over 11 years ago!
