I would suggest it is your sim that has failed.
Your wife's sim may still be 4g even if her phone isn't.
Do try turning 4g off on your phone to see if it found a 3g connection.
Although you would expect the phone to do this itself, it's worth trying.
If not, a free new sim from the shop should have you up and running again in minutes.

I use a Samsung Galaxy GT-19195. Two days ago I lost virtually all signal strength. My wife uses a £59 Nokia on O2 PAYG and gets 2/3 bars...! Before I lost it it showed a comfortable 2/3 bars G4.

I have tried all O2 suggestions without success.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I am in my eighties and have no landline, so my mobile is pretty well my only contact with the outside world...!

You can check here for any network issues http://status.o2.co.uk/ but it could be a sim card or phone failure.
Try your wife's sim in your phone and if it works pop into your local o2 shop for a free replacement sim.
If it doesn't work, you need your phone repairing or a new phone.

If your wife's phone is ok I would suggest cleaning the sim card and rebooting the phone. Also check postcode

http://status.o2.co.uk

It might be that the Nokia doesn't get 4g and yours does, so try following this guide to change the Samsung to 2g(gsm) and 3g (wcdma + gsm) and see if you get better signals.

Voice calls don't go on 4g (lte) in any case - that's just for faster data, and it might be there are 4g issues in your area. Also SIM testing, swapping and cleaning are highly recommended before replacing the phone.

I hope it is okay to reply to everyone here. Thanks for all the input. I did try my wife's sim and it showed much better results. However, it is not 4G, which likely does have a bearing on the issue. The two good tips I have not tried - switching to 3G and visiting the O2 shop - I will be doing right off....

Again, many thanks everyone...

Ed

My phone was set on: LTE/WCDMA/GSM...

I switched it to WCDMA/GSM and immediately got 3 bars.

There is no mention fo G3 or G4 but the are two other options which mean nothing to me. Would you believe it: there is no mention of any of them in the handbook. Enough to make one curse Samsung...!

Thanks again.
