Hi guys, I need help.

I'm in the USA with the army at the minute, and the Sony Xperia Z2 I bought 3 weeks ago packed in after getting some water on it. I'm not back in the UK for about 6 weeks, and then I'm straight off to somewhere else. This phone is my only method of keeping in touch back home, apart from sporadic use of a net cafe when I'm in transit. What's my best bet for getting this sorted? Can/Will O2 send me a replacement phone?

Hi

Sorry your in this situation.

Have you tried removing the battery and using the rice method ?

O2 and the Manufacturers standard warranty will not cover this type of phone failure.

Problem is when water has got into the phone it can oxidise the internal boards and cause failure straight away or possibly issues further down the line.

Did you not use the seals that make this phone waterproof. If you did then speak to Sony to see if they can assist here http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/support/

Do you have O2 insurance ?

O2 link : https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/insurance/mobile-insurance

If you have Home Contents cover check the terms and conditions to see if a mobile phone is part of the cover.

Also check any Bank Account as some provide cover too.

All these will probably include an excess fee and check they cover water ingression.

You would have to check with each if they would despatch a phone to the states.

In the interim you could purchase a sim free phone to use your SIM card in ,or ask to lend one of your colleagues phone in the unit as long as they are on O2 ,or maybe they have a spare phone.

Ask your C.O as they may have a phone you can use.

Ask one of your family or friends to send you a spare phone in the box they send any goodies in.

O2 contact http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus

You can't remove the battery on a Z2 and the phone is waterproof anyway, so assuming you had the ports covered with their caps on your warranty should be fine.
O2 won't just send a replacement though so your best chance is to contact Sony who will advise of your nearest service location.

One of the big selling points of the Z2 was the water and dust resistance properties of the phone and indeed Sony claim that the phone can be resistant to water after being submerged for 30 minutes.

The battery is built in and therefore non removable.

There is either a fault with the phone or the port covers maybe left open enabling water to enter the phone.

Either way I would be sending it to Sony. They are an international company so have many outlets in the USA. Have you thought of approaching one of those stores?

http://store.sony.com/-cms-page.sony.store.listing;pgid=ruJWIrV4K2JSRpPWThu7hX6L0000uxJkZKtl;sid=dpgsFrZ1hsSpFuJxV75OEoR_li7cn_C0jaWPgmwd

If you bring it back to the UK they would probably want to send it for repair due to the timescales involved.

I can't see them sending a new phone to the US but possibly call them now to report the issue and get it logged or deal directly with Sony.

It's highly unlikely that Sony USA would repair a phone that was purchased in the UK. I can tell you from personal experience that Sony UK would not repair a device that I bought in the US. They may be a global company, but their support departments are seperate and distinct. Samsung also operates a similar policy regarding warranty and repair. It's also unlikely that the OP would have any receipt of proof of purchase with him in the US, which would make things even more difficult even if Sony US agreed to look at the problem.

Phones can be quite resistant to water damage. It is worth perhaps trying to dry it out and see if it works.

Depends where the water got to and if it dried out quickly enough.

Leave it out in the sun or put on a radiator for a day or two.

The O2 pay monthly customer phone line must have unusual hours as I cannot get through. I'm off to the middle east right after I'm home so I'd love to have this sorted before I go, it's the small things that keep morale up! Thanks all for the contact numbers, I have no phone to use at the minute so contacting SONY might be out of the question for a while, unless I can find an email address to communicate with them. I promise to follow this up and let everyone know how this progresses, hopefully others will benefit.

Regards!
