Text messages that have been deleted are kept in a far distant piece of memory on the phone hence why the police are able to review past history.

However I have never been able to find a program that would allow the user of the handset to bring them back.

So I would follow Perksie's guidance. If you want to keep a text you can save a small number to your sim card.

SMS Back up Pro is one that I have used in the past as it not only allows a copy & paste function (when switching phones for example) but will also email a back up of your texts to your Gmail account.
